The Beatles

From their beginnings in Liverpool in 1960, The Beatles established themselves as a sonic force that transcended genres. Starting from the roots of 1950s skiffle and rock and roll, their music evolved to innovatively incorporate elements of classical and traditional pop music. They explored soundscapes ranging from folk and Hindu music to psychedelia and hard rock, always with a pioneering approach to songwriting, recording, and artistic presentation. This constant reinvention positioned them as icons of the 1960s counterculture and helped elevate popular music to the status of art.

The band, which crystallized in 1962 with the lineup of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, forged its identity in the clubs of Liverpool and Hamburg. Under the guidance of their manager Brian Epstein and the production of George Martin, who expanded their sonic possibilities, they achieved their first success with "Love Me Do" in late 1962. The growing euphoria, known as "Beatlemania," catapulted them to international fame in early 1964, becoming a key driver of the "British Invasion" in the US market. Their cinematic foray came with A Hard Day's Night in 1964.

Biography

By 1966, the desire to perfect their studio work and the demands of touring led them to stop live performances. This period fostered the creation of more complex albums such as Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966), and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). They continued to achieve commercial success with The Beatles (the "White Album", 1968) and Abbey Road (1969), albums that marked the beginning of the album era as the primary format. Additionally, they fueled interest in Eastern spirituality, electronic music, and visual art in music. In 1968, they founded Apple Corps, a multimedia corporation that today manages their legacy. After their breakup in 1970, each member embarked on successful solo careers. John Lennon was murdered in 1980 and George Harrison passed away in 2001, while McCartney and Starr remain musically active.

The Beatles hold the title of the best-selling music act of all time, exceeding 600 million units worldwide. They dominate the US charts, accumulating the most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 (20) and number-one albums on the Billboard 200 (19). In the UK, they hold the record for single sales and held the number-one album record until 2026. Their career was recognized with eight Grammy Awards, four Brit Awards, an Academy Award for Let It Be, and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, with their individual members being recognized between 1994 and 2015. Publications like Rolling Stone have consistently ranked them as the most influential artists in history.
