The story behind

When you dive into Every Little Thing, you encounter a piece that moves away from the predictable. One of the things that makes it special is how John Lennon and Paul McCartney share the lead vocals on the verses, singing together on the same microphone. Then, in the chorus, Paul takes the main melody and John joins in harmony. This can be clearly heard on Anthology 4. Additionally, the song introduces a sound that wasn't common in the rock of the era: the incorporation of timpani, which Ringo Starr used to give rhythmic accents to the choruses. There's also a subtle use of piano, which George Harrison initially played as if it were an electric guitar, creating a counter-melody during the verses.

The composition of Every Little Thing has a couple of stories about its origin. Paul McCartney recalls writing it in the music room of his then-girlfriend Jane Asher's house in London. Another version, based on a 1964 interview, suggests it was born in Atlantic City, during a stop by The Beatles on their US tour in late August of that year. John Lennon, for his part, mentioned in 1980 that McCartney was the principal author, although he himself may have contributed some ideas. The recording took place in September 1964 at EMI Studios in London. There were moments of enjoyment during the sessions, such as when a take was interrupted because McCartney burped, or when another ended with general laughter. George Martin produced this recording, which is part of the album Beatles for Sale, released in December 1964 in the UK. In North America, Capitol Records included it on the album Beatles VI in June 1965.
