The sound of the album has a touch of country in some songs, like I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party or I’m a Loser. The latter, in particular, shows a clear influence of Bob Dylan, something that marked a before and after in how folk and rock were mixed together. Although the album does not include the single I Feel Fine or She’s a Woman, both are of high quality and are outside of it.
Recording began in August 1964, a month after A Hard Day's Night was released, and was interrupted by a tour in the United States. Often, the boys wrote the songs directly in the studio, between performances. The exhaustion was noticeable in the cover photos, but they went on. The album reached number one in the UK, stayed there for eleven weeks and was a hit that marked a before and after.
