Words of Love

There are songs that, when played, invite you on a journey through time, and Words of Love is one of them. When Buddy Holly recorded it in April 1957, at the Norman Petty studios in Clovis, New Mexico, he experimented with his own voice, combining tapes to create harmonies with himself. The result was a piece that, while not a huge hit for him as a performer, became one of his most valued recordings and is found in many of his collections. The track, with its duration of just 1:56, is classified within jangle pop and folk rock, and its B-side included Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues.

Many years later, in 1964, The Beatles decided to give their own spin to Words of Love. For them, who were admirers of Holly, it was an opportunity to recreate that characteristic sound. John Lennon and Paul McCartney, along with George Harrison, joined in on vocals, attempting to maintain the vocal and instrumental essence of the original. The recording, which took place in October of that year, was surprisingly quick: only two takes and an additional vocal layer. This version first appeared on the British album Beatles for Sale and later on the American Beatles VI. Before their big breakthrough, Lennon and Harrison had already performed it live between 1958 and 1962, but for the official version, Lennon and McCartney shared the lead vocals. The album Beatles for Sale, released in December 1964, marked a shift in the group's tone, reflecting a certain weariness after an intense tour that had consolidated them worldwide in 1964.
