The story behind
The Beatles wrote No Reply for the Beatles for Sale, an album that came out in December 1964. The song talks about a boy who can't get to his girlfriend, although he sees her from the window. John Lennon wrote the lyrics, but they were credited to Lennon/McCartney.
The melody is in C major, and the structure is clear: two verses, a bridge and an extra verse. It doesn't have a traditional chorus, but the No Reply refrain repeats as if it were one. The band plays with acoustic guitar, bass, drums and piano.
At first, Lennon wanted to sing the high part of the chorus, but his voice had been damaged by constant use. So Paul McCartney took that part, and Lennon had to do the low line. It was a decision that marked the song, but didn't change it much.
