The story behind
The Beatles recorded Mr. Moonlight in 1964, before the album was released. The song was already being performed live, and the studio version remains the most famous. The vocals were sung by John Lennon, with the classic Beatles harmony, and Paul McCartney played the Hammond organ on some takes. They recorded the song on two different days: August 14th and October 18th. On the first recording, they did four takes, two of which appear in Anthology 1. On the second, McCartney played the organ again on the last takes. The song was released on the album Beatles for Sale in the United Kingdom in December 1964. It was a hit, reaching number one on the British chart and staying in the top for several months.
