The story behind

The Beatles recorded P.S. I Love You in 1962, as a B-side of their first single, Love Me Do. The song was written in spring of that year, while Paul McCartney was in Hamburg. The original recording was at Abbey Road studio, in London, on September 11th. There, George Martin had hired Andy White as a temporary drummer, because he wasn't satisfied with Pete Best. But the other guys had already replaced Best with Ringo Starr, who attended the session and played congas. The recording was led by Ron Richards, who told McCartney that it couldn't be the A-side of the single, because there was already a song with the same title.

The lyrics follow a letter, as a theme that Paul wanted to explore. It says that it wasn't a real love message, but an idea for a song. The melody is typical of McCartney, but has two interesting changes: an unexpected chord at the beginning and a surprise in the title phrase. John Lennon contributed a single chord in each verse. The song entered the public domain in Europe in 2013.
