Please Please Me

The Beatles released this album in March 1963, just when they were starting to gain serious attention. It was their first studio album, recorded in London, and produced by George Martin, a guy who already knew them from before. The band was still young, but already had a defined style, a mix of rock and roll, pop and a touch of what later would be called Merseybeat.

About the album

Please Please Me, according to DoReSol

The recording was quick, almost everything in a single session. They did it in the EMI studios, where Martin worked. Although at first they wanted to do it live, at the Cavern Club, he didn't allow it for technical reasons. Instead, they recorded in the studio, and the result was an album that sold well, stayed in the top 10 for more than a year. That was unusual for a debut.

It included songs they had already released as singles, like Love Me Do, and also covers of songs they already knew. What stood out was that the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney were written by them, not by others. It was something new, and helped the band stand out as more than just a cover band.

In the United States, the album didn't come out at first. There, The Beatles didn't have much success until Beatlemania arrived. Then, they released a shorter version, and later, when they moved to CD, they adjusted the editions to match the British ones. It remains an important album today, although it's not the most famous of the band.
