The story behind

The song A Taste of Honey has a history that dates back to 1960, when it was born as part of a Broadway production based on a 1958 British play. Initially, it was conceived as an instrumental piece, a recurring theme that would later be adapted. It was in 1962 that Lenny Welch recorded the first version with lyrics, and that performance served as inspiration for The Beatles. They incorporated it into their live repertoire, making small adjustments to the chorus words. The version we know from them, included on their 1963 debut album Please Please Me, was recorded with George Martin as producer and Richard Langham, Norman Smith, and A. B. Lincoln on engineering. In this recording, Paul McCartney would double his vocals on the bridge, a technique they would use on other occasions. The band also featured it several times on BBC radio shows, such as Here We Go and Easy Beat.

The original theme, composed by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow, had its own accolades. Bobby Scott's instrumental compositions for the musical appeared on his 1960 album, released by Atlantic Records. After its use in the film of the same name, the instrumental piece received a Grammy Award in 1963. Later, in 1965, Herb Alpert recorded an instrumental version that had a significant impact, topping charts and winning several Grammy Awards in 1966, including Record of the Year. The duration of The Beatles' version is 2:03.
