The story behind

Carry That Weight, according to DoReSol

When you dive into Carry That Weight, you encounter a piece that seems to encapsulate a very particular moment for The Beatles. The song is placed just before the end of the B-side of the album Abbey Road, functioning as a sonic and thematic bridge. What's interesting is that it's not just an isolated song, but it directly dialogues with others from the same album. For example, its central part, with brass, electric guitar, and vocals, reprises the beginning of You Never Give Me Your Money, but with a twist in the lyrics. Furthermore, the end of Carry That Weight brings back a fingerpicked guitar motif that we had already heard at the close of that other song, creating a sense of a completed cycle. A sonic peculiarity is that the chorus features all four Beatles singing in unison, something that wasn't so common in their repertoire.

The lyrics, according to interpretations, could speak of the burden of being The Beatles, the idea that nothing they did individually could match what they had achieved together, and the impossibility of shedding that legacy. Paul McCartney himself mentioned that the song referred to the business difficulties the band was facing and the atmosphere at Apple at the time. It is even said that John Lennon, upon hearing it, felt that McCartney was singing about all of them. The idea for this composition arose during the sessions at Twickenham Studios, where McCartney presented it as a light piece, intended for Ringo to sing, following the style of Act Naturally. The recording of Golden Slumbers and Carry That Weight was done jointly, beginning on July 2, 1969. At that time, Lennon was recovering from a car accident in Scotland. The rhythm section featured McCartney on piano, Harrison on bass, and Starr on drums. Later, vocals and additional guitars were added, and then, in August, an orchestra of thirty musicians was included. The production was handled by George Martin at EMI studios in London, and the album Abbey Road was released on September 26, 1969, in the United Kingdom and on October 1 in the United States.
