The story behind
The story of *All You Need Is Love* is fascinating, and not just because of its direct message. It was conceived as the United Kingdom's contribution to *Our World*, the first global television event broadcast via satellite in 1967. The idea was for the song to have a simple message, understandable to audiences in 25 countries and over 400 million people. For this reason, John Lennon wrote deliberately simple lyrics, capturing the utopian spirit of the era. For the recording, which took place at EMI studios in London between June and July 1967, the band used a pre-recorded backing track, to which they added vocals and orchestral arrangements conducted by George Martin. The track begins with a fragment of the French national anthem, *La Marseillaise*, and concludes with musical quotes from pieces such as Glenn Miller's *In the Mood*, *Greensleeves*, an invention by Bach, and their own 1963 hit, *She Loves You*. The studio for the broadcast was filled with color with posters, streamers, and guests in psychedelic attire, including members of other major bands.
The release of *All You Need Is Love* as a single in July 1967, with *Baby, You're a Rich Man* on the B-side, coincided with the peak of The Beatles' popularity, shortly after the release of their album *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band*. The song quickly became a hit, reaching number one on the sales charts in the UK and the United States, and resonating as an anthem for the counterculture and its *flower power* philosophy. It was the last song the band recorded and released before the death of their manager, Brian Epstein, in August 1967. Subsequently, *All You Need Is Love* and *Baby, You're a Rich Man* were included on the American album *Magical Mystery Tour* and served as the basis for the 1968 animated film *Yellow Submarine*. The original, black-and-white broadcast was colorized for its inclusion in the 1995 documentary series *The Beatles Anthology*. Lennon's legacy as a humanitarian was strengthened by this song, although over time its message has been seen by some as naive. Since 2009, June 25th has been celebrated as *Global Beatles Day* in commemoration of their performance on *Our World*.
