The story behind
When John Lennon and Paul McCartney sat down to create *I Wanna Be Your Man*, they didn't imagine the song would end up being a starting point for another band. The main idea arose while they were in a club in Richmond, London, and it seems Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were nearby. The Rolling Stones' version, released as their second single, became their first Top 20 British hit. It features the distinctive slide guitar touches of Brian Jones and the powerful bass of Bill Wyman. Curiously, it is one of the few The Rolling Stones songs where Brian Jones handles backing vocals.
The story goes that Andrew Loog Oldham, manager and producer of The Rolling Stones, or even the band themselves, crossed paths with Lennon and McCartney. Upon learning they needed material for a single, the two songwriters went to De Lane Lea Studios in London to finish the song, which they had already started. While the members of The Rolling Stones watched, Lennon and McCartney completed the piece in a corner. The band adapted the song to their own style, giving it a rawer sound closer to that of Elmore James. The Rolling Stones' version was recorded on October 7, 1963, and produced by Andrew Loog Oldham and Eric Easton.
On the other hand, The Beatles recorded their own version for their second studio album, *With the Beatles*, released on November 22, 1963. In this interpretation, the lead vocals are handled by Ringo Starr. The sound is characterized by an open E chord with a lot of guitar tremolo, played through a Vox AC30 amplifier. The recording featured engineering by Richard Langham, Norman Smith, and Geoff Emerick, under the production of George Martin. The album *With the Beatles* included eight original compositions, seven by Lennon–McCartney, and six covers of rock and roll and R&B tracks.
