The story behind

When Paul McCartney was in Paris, staying at the George V hotel, the idea for Can't Buy Me Love arose. The pressure of the success of I Want to Hold Your Hand, which had reached number one in the United States, spurred him to compose. The song was recorded on January 29, 1964, at the Pathé Marconi studios in Paris, while the Beatles were in the city for a series of concerts. It was a particular moment, as EMI's German subsidiary insisted they record in German to sell more there, which led George Martin to travel with a pre-prepared rhythm track for Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand. Taking advantage of the time, the Beatles recorded the instrumental base and a guide vocal for Can't Buy Me Love. Upon hearing the first take, they decided that the background vocal harmonies, something characteristic of them, were not necessary, thus becoming their first single without that distinctive element. McCartney's lead vocal was added on February 25 at EMI studios in London, where George Harrison's guitar solo was also retouched. Curiously, his original solo can still be heard in the background on the final recording.

Can't Buy Me Love was released in March 1964 as the A-side of their sixth single and quickly topped the charts in several countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and France. The song's structure is based on a twelve-bar blues, something uncommon in the Beatles' own repertoire. When asked about the meaning of the lyrics, McCartney clarified that it was not about a prostitute, but about the idea that material possessions, while pleasant, cannot buy what one truly longs for. Later, reflecting on the advantages that money and fame had brought him, he came to think that the song should have been called Can Buy Me Love. This track was part of the album A Hard Day's Night, released in July 1964, which remained at the top of the British charts for twenty-one weeks and was the group's first record to include only original compositions.
