When we think of Pink Floyd, it is almost inevitable to imagine expansive soundscapes and atmospheres that transport you. Since their beginnings in London in 1965, with Syd Barrett at the helm, the band stood out for going beyond the conventional structures of rock. Their early compositions, such as the singles "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play" from 1967, along with the debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, already showcased that inclination towards the experimental and the psychedelic. The arrival of David Gilmour in late 1967, following Barrett’s departure due to health issues, solidified a lineup that, with Nick Mason on drums and Richard Wright on keyboards, alongside Roger Waters on bass, would lay the foundations for a fascinating sonic evolution.

It was in the 1970s when Roger Waters took on a central role in the lyrics and conceptualization of the albums, guiding the band through a series of masterpieces that defined progressive rock. Records like The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979) not only achieved massive commercial success but also explored deep and complex themes, accompanied by sound experimentation that became their distinctive hallmark. The way they conceived their albums, as complete experiences rather than collections of songs, and their elaborate stage productions marked a turning point in the concept of a rock album.

Biography

Despite internal tensions that led to Wright’s departure in 1981 and then Waters’ in 1985, Gilmour and Mason continued Pink Floyd’s legacy. With Wright’s return, they recorded albums such as A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994), both backed by large-scale tours. The reunion of Gilmour, Mason, and Wright alongside Waters for a performance at the Live 8 event in 2005 was a significant moment, especially after the passing of Barrett in 2006 and Wright in 2008. The band’s last studio album, The Endless River (2014), was built from unreleased material from the The Division Bell sessions, demonstrating the persistence of their sonic quest. In 2022, the band released the song "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" as an artistic expression in response to global events.
