Fun facts

Pink Floyd released Learning to Fly as the first single from their thirteenth album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. The song reached number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and stayed at number one on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks for three consecutive weeks in September 1987. In contrast, it failed to enter the official top 40 singles chart in the United Kingdom.

The story behind

Pink Floyd wrote Learning to Fly as the second track of the album A Momentary Lapse of Reason. It was the first single from the album and reached #70 on Billboard and #1 on Mainstream Rock Tracks. The song was mainly written by David Gilmour, and it speaks about his obsession with flying. In the middle of the track, you can hear the voice of Nick Mason, the band's drummer, who is also a good pilot.

The song was played in almost all the concerts of the A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell tours. Live, the guitar solos were played by Tim Renwick, although in the recorded version, they were done by Gilmour. The video, directed by Storm Thorgerson, shows a young Native American who turns into a hawk, along with images of a worker who becomes a pilot and a child who moves away from his mother. It was the only video of the band that won a Video Music Award in 1988.
