The story behind

Pink Floyd released Astronomy Domine in 1967, as the first track of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The song began with the voice of Peter Jenner, his manager, speaking through a megaphone as if he were an astronaut. Then, a flashing sound mixes with the drums of Nick Mason and the guitar of Syd Barrett, which has a distinct sound. Then enters the organ of Richard Wright, which gives it a more spacey touch. The vocals of Barrett and Wright continue with an atmosphere that seems to come from space.

Barrett's guitar, with his echo pedal, creates effects that recall psychedelia. The song was performed live from 1966 to 1971. After a long time, the band played it again on the tour The Division Bell Tour in 1994. In that version, David Gilmour played the guitar and the vocals, because Syd was no longer in his best form.
