The story behind

Welcome to the Machine, according to DoReSol

The music of Welcome to the Machine is built on a deep and persistent pulse, generated by an EMS VCS 3 synthesizer. This base sound, with a single echo, is the backbone of the piece. Originally, this pulse was intended to be played on the bass. The song's rhythmic structure features interesting variations; for example, the intro, while not formally changing time signature, sustains each chord for three bars instead of the expected two or four, creating a nine-bar section. In the verses and choruses, the predominant time signature is 4/4, but a 7/4 bar is inserted in specific phrases, such as "It's all right, we know where you've been", which alters the sequence and temporarily reverses the stereo panning. Later, an instrumental section introduces a 12-string guitar riff in 3/4 time, ascending the E minor scale before a shift to C major seventh. The piece returns to 4/4, with another 7/4 insertion in the phrase "It's all right, we told you what to dream", at which point the stereo panning returns to normal. Curiously, these two phrases starting with "It's all right" are the only ones that include chords outside of some form of E minor or C major, introducing an A major chord with its C sharp, in contrast to the usual C chords.

The lyrics of Welcome to the Machine, written by Roger Waters, address disillusionment with the music industry and industrialized society in general. It focuses on the figure of an aspiring musician who is absorbed by the system, represented as "The Machine". The lines suggest how the artist's rebellious ideas are co-opted and how their identity is crushed by imposed expectations, as reflected in "What did you dream, it's alright we told you what to dream". The song was recorded between February and July 1975 at EMI Studios in London, as part of the album Wish You Were Here, released in September of the same year. The album was conceived from material composed during performances in Europe. The album's production was handled by Pink Floyd, with Peter James as recording engineer. On the original LP, Welcome to the Machine connected directly to the first five parts of the suite Shine On You Crazy Diamond, closing the first side. In later CD editions, especially the 1997 and 2000 remasters, a very subtle connection to Have a Cigar can be heard. The music video accompanying the song was animated by Gerald Scarfe, initially serving as a backdrop for the band's performances on their 1977 tour.
