The story behind
Stay, according to DoReSol
The song Stay by Pink Floyd stands out for its introspective and melancholic atmosphere, offering a glimpse into the complexities of casual relationships. Composed by Roger Waters and Richard Wright, its lyrics reflect a mix of frustration and indifference toward a sexual partner, connecting it to other themes in the band about loneliness and the search for connection. Musically, the piece is built around a G pedal tone on the bass, while the higher chords follow an I-IV-V progression, creating a sense of nostalgia. The use of a G major ninth chord generates that bittersweet feeling that characterizes many of Wright’s compositions.
Recorded in 1972 for the album Obscured by Clouds, the song was produced in a context where Pink Floyd was mid-tour and exploring new sonorities. This album, which also served as the soundtrack for Barbet Schroeder’s film La Vallée, was an intermediate step for the band before their masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon. The recording took place in France over two sessions, using borrowed equipment, which added a sense of spontaneity to the production. Though Stay was not released as a main single, it did appear as the B-side of Free Four, showcasing the band’s versatility at the time.
