The story behind
Fat Old Sun, according to DoReSol
The song Fat Old Sun by Pink Floyd is a beautiful evocation of childhood, written and sung by David Gilmour. This track, which is part of the album Atom Heart Mother released in 1970, stands out for its nostalgic atmosphere and enveloping sound, blending elements of psychedelic folk and progressive rock. Gilmour, who handled most of the instruments in the recording, created a soundscape that transports the listener to an idyllic summer in Cambridge, where memories of swimming in the River Cam and enjoying nature come to life. The song begins and ends with a bell effect that adds an ethereal touch, a resource also used in the song Big Black Smoke by The Kinks.
The recording took place at the renowned Abbey Road Studios, where on June 11, 1970, the basic tracks were recorded, followed by overdubs in the following days. Gilmour and Richard Wright are the only band members who participated in the recording, with Wright contributing his organ touch. During live performances from 1970 to 1971, Fat Old Sun evolved into a more extended and electric piece, often stretching up to fifteen minutes, which contrasts with its more intimate studio version. Although it was withdrawn from the setlist in 1972 with the release of The Dark Side of the Moon, the song has resurfaced on several occasions in Gilmour’s concerts, which he has performed in different formats, even acoustically during his solo tours since 2001.
The lyrics of the song reflect a transition from childhood innocence to the harsh reality of adult life, using the setting sun as a symbol of this change. This recurring theme in Gilmour’s work can also be seen in his song High Hopes, written more than two decades later. While some critics have been less enthusiastic, describing the song as “bland,” its ability to evoke emotions and memories continues to resonate with those who listen to it. The story behind Fat Old Sun and its connection to childhood and the Cambridge landscape make it a unique piece within Pink Floyd’s repertoire, showcasing Gilmour’s skill in capturing moments of life through his music.
