The story behind
Summer ’68, according to DoReSol
The song Summer ’68, lasting 5:28, is a piece composed entirely by Richard Wright, who also wrote the lyrics. At the time, this song was part of the album Atom Heart Mother, released by Pink Floyd in the United Kingdom on October 2, 1970, and shortly after in the United States. The recording took place at EMI Studios in London, now known as Abbey Road Studios. This album marked a milestone for the band as it was their first to reach the top spot on the UK charts.
The production of Summer ’68 was handled by Norman Smith and the band itself, with Peter Bown and Alan Parsons serving as recording engineers. The album Atom Heart Mother is also remembered for its distinctive cover designed by Hipgnosis, featuring a cow in a meadow, marking the beginning of a trend where the band avoided including their name or photographs on their album artwork during the 1970s. While the album was well-received commercially, some band members, such as Roger Waters and David Gilmour, expressed less than favorable opinions about it. The lineup of Pink Floyd at the time already included David Gilmour, who joined in 1968, replacing Syd Barrett.
