The story behind
The song Vera, born from the mind of Roger Waters, immerses us in a reflection on absence and hope, taking as a starting point an iconic phrase from the British singer Vera Lynn. The inspiration comes directly from her song We'll Meet Again, a song of hope for families separated by war. In Vera, however, that promise of reunion seems elusive for the character of Pink, the protagonist of The Wall. The brief seconds of this piece, which barely exceed a minute and a half, are enriched by fragments of dialogue and sound effects taken from the film The Battle of Britain, adding a layer of realism and urgency to the atmosphere.
Recorded as part of the album The Wall, released on November 30, 1979, Vera is integrated into the narrative of this ambitious project. The Wall, conceived by Roger Waters during the 1977 tour, is a rock opera that explores social isolation through the figure of Pink, a rock star. The production of this album, which included Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour, James Guthrie, and Roger Waters himself as producers, and featured engineering by James Guthrie, resulted in a work that, despite receiving initially divided reviews, consolidated itself as one of the band's most significant albums.
