More about The Doors
Biography
The band's history took a significant turn in 1971 with the passing of Jim Morrison. Despite this, they continued as a trio and released two more albums before disbanding in 1973. In 1978, the remaining members reunited to create An American Prayer, an album that combined new music with Morrison's 1969 and 1970 poetry recordings. They had a brief reunion in 1993 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in the 21st century, there were some specific projects. In 2002, Manzarek and Krieger began playing with Ian Astbury under the name "The Doors of the 21st Century," which led to some legal disputes with Densmore and Morrison's estate. Finally, they performed as Manzarek–Krieger until Manzarek's death in 2013.
An interesting fact is that The Doors was the first American band to achieve eight consecutive Gold and Platinum certified albums from the RIAA. They are estimated to have sold over 100 million records worldwide. Their influence can be felt on many lists of the most important artists of all time, such as Rolling Stone's, where they ranked 41st. The beginning of it all was a chance encounter on Santa Monica beach in July 1965 between Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek, who recognized each other from having studied together at UCLA. Morrison shared that he was writing songs, and upon hearing the first lines of "Moonlight Drive," Manzarek was inspired by the possibility of setting those lyrics to music. Shortly after, John Densmore joined, whom Manzarek knew from meditation classes, and finally Robby Krieger joined in late 1965, completing the lineup that would record their first demo.
