The story behind
Love Her Madly, according to DoReSol
The music of Love Her Madly, released in March 1971, has a distinctive air. It was the first single from L.A. Woman, The Doors' last album with Jim Morrison as lead vocalist. This song became one of their most notable hits, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and third place on the Canadian charts. At the time, it was described as a precise combination with potential for FM radio and general charts.
The composition of Love Her Madly originated with Robby Krieger during the period when Jim Morrison was facing trial, around September 1970. Krieger was experimenting with a 12-string guitar when the music was born, and the lyrics were inspired by his own difficulties and arguments with his then-partner. The title, according to Ray Manzarek, comes from a phrase Duke Ellington used to use when saying goodbye to his audience: "We love you madly". The recording of this piece, along with the rest of the album L.A. Woman, took place at The Doors' Workshop in Los Angeles, with Bruce Botnick as engineer and co-producer with the band, following the departure of the original producer. Session musician Jerry Scheff contributed the bass line to the song.
