The story behind
Flaming, according to DoReSol
The song Flaming by Pink Floyd is a sonic journey that captures the essence of late 1960s psychedelia. Composed and sung by Syd Barrett, its lyrics evoke fantastical imagery and childhood games, such as the famous line "here we go, so high." Originally titled "Snowing," the song remained in the band’s repertoire until late 1968, and after Barrett’s departure, David Gilmour took over the vocal role. This piece stands out for its ethereal atmosphere and distinctive sound, reflecting the experiences of the era, including the influences of LSD.
Recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios in London on March 16, 1967, Flaming was released as a single on November 6 of that same year, though it did not chart. This single, which also includes The Gnome as its B-side, was the band’s third release in the United States. It is worth noting that the mono mix of this single differs slightly from the stereo and mono versions known today. Throughout its history, Flaming was performed live on various occasions, becoming a staple of their shows until the band decided to phase it out. The recording of this song reflects Pink Floyd’s experimental spirit and their quest for a unique sound, which would still resonate in their future works.
