The story behind

The song *Young Lust* by Pink Floyd, with a duration of just over three minutes, is presented as one of the band's most direct forays into hard rock, with clear blues influences. The piece, composed in the key of E minor, is distinguished by the lead vocals of David Gilmour, although Roger Waters joins in on second vocals during the chorus. This piece, which precedes *Empty Spaces* and follows *One of My Turns* on the album *The Wall*, narrates a part of the story of "Pink", the protagonist of the record.

In the narrative of *The Wall*, "Pink" is a rock star whose itinerant life takes him away from home. During his tours, he invites groupies to his room, distancing himself from his wife. The climax of the song comes with a telephone dialogue between Pink and an operator. In this conversation, it is revealed that his wife has had a lover, which accelerates the character's mental deterioration. The scene of the call was conceived by recording engineer James Guthrie, who recorded a real operator in London, without informing her that the conversation was being recorded. Of the three operators Guthrie recorded, it was the third that was ultimately included on the album. In the film *Pink Floyd: The Wall*, the call sequence occurs before *Young Lust*, presenting a slight variation in the character's chronology. The guitar line that closes the second verse of *Young Lust* found new life in later interpretations by the band. It was reused after the guitar solo in *Learning to Fly* during live performances of *Delicate Sound of Thunder* and *A Passage of Time*, which were part of the shows in Turin, Italy, in 1994, and on the album *P*U*L*S*E*. A version of *Young Lust* was performed by Canadian musician Bryan Adams during Roger Waters' concert of *The Wall* in Berlin, Germany, on July 21, 1990. This performance, recorded and filmed in Potsdamer Platz, reached number 7 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and remains popular among Adams' fans.
