Fun facts

Pink Floyd released Wish You Were Here as the main track of their album of the same name in 1975. The song was written together by David Gilmour and Roger Waters, one played guitar and sang, the other played bass and also sang. It is a piece that feels like a letter written from afar, with a rhythm that goes back and forth, as if asking if someone is still there.

The story behind

Pink Floyd recorded Wish You Were Here in 1975, at the EMI studios in London. The song Shine On You Crazy Diamond is an homage to Syd Barrett, who had left the band seven years earlier. Barrett visited the recording by chance, in 1975. The song Have a Cigar includes the voice of Roy Harper, and Welcome to the Machine has choruses by Venetta Fields. The album began with a long instrumental introduction, as if it were a prologue. The lyrics of Shine On You Crazy Diamond speak of a young man who shone like the sun, but who got lost in the darkness. The song Wish You Were Here asks if someone is still waiting for you to be there, as if you were absent. The music feels empty, as if everything had ended. The song Welcome to the Machine begins with a door that opens, as if it were a symbol of something that is lost. The lyrics criticize the music industry, which cares more about money than art. The song Have a Cigar mocks the types who think they are important in the industry, using phrases that are heard on the first days. The song Wish You Were Here also speaks of ambition and compassion, as if they were at war. The album feels as if everything had ended, but also as if something had been lost.
