The story behind

When you encounter I Will, you come across a melody that Paul McCartney himself considered one of his favorites, one that he felt presented itself almost completely naturally. The recording of this piece, which is part of the 1968 double album known as *The Beatles* (or *White Album*), took place at EMI studios in London. The process of capturing the song's foundation required a considerable number of attempts, no less than 67 takes, although George Harrison was not present during these sessions.

The genesis of I Will dates back to a period in Rishikesh, India, where McCartney and other associates worked on various compositions. While the music came together with relative ease, the lyrics took longer to define, even remaining incomplete at the time of starting to record in London. McCartney recalled exploring lyrical ideas with a lunar theme alongside Donovan, but ultimately opted for more direct and simple words, typical of a love song. It is interesting to note how, during one of the takes, McCartney improvised a fragment that would later be included as a kind of unsettling introduction at the end of Cry Baby Cry on the album. The song, with its duration of just over a minute and a half, is positioned as the penultimate track on side two of the *White Album*, released by Apple Records on November 22, 1968.
