The story behind
When you dive into *The Night Before*, you encounter a piece that stands out for its harmonic structure, something uncommon in the early stages of The Beatles. The chord progression in the verses, moving from I to ♭VII, then to IV, and finally to V, is a movement that, while popular among their contemporaries, they had not explored before. This detail, along with the way the main melody intertwines with the backing vocals, creating an almost conversational musical dialogue, foreshadows the complex vocal textures they would develop later. The song, described as pop rock or rock and roll with touches of blues and R&B, was recorded in February 1965, at EMI Studios in London.
The composition of *The Night Before* is attributed to the duo Lennon–McCartney, although Paul McCartney recalled writing it in the apartment of his then-girlfriend, Jane Asher, in London. It was the first time John Lennon used a Hohner Pianet electric piano on a band recording, adding a novel sonic texture. The piece, which is part of the soundtrack and the 1965 film *Help!*, was only performed live once by The Beatles, during their last BBC Radio appearance. McCartney himself considered it one of his favorites from the era and one of the group's best recordings up to that point.
