The story behind

When George Harrison composed I Need You, he was looking for his own space within The Beatles' compositions. After a period where his musical contributions had been scarce, he felt the need for his songs to have a place on the group's albums. Thus, he presented I Need You and You Like Me Too Much to be considered for the film Help!. The recording of this piece, which took place in February 1965, marked a milestone as it was the first time the band used a volume pedal on a guitar. The resulting sound, with distinctive guitar cadences, was built on suspended chords in the key of A major, creating an atmosphere that is felt in both the introduction and much of the song's structure.

The lyrics of I Need You are inspired by George Harrison's relationship with Pattie Boyd, whom he met in March 1964. The calm she brought him amidst the whirlwind of Beatlemania is reflected in this song, which addresses a moment of separation. Before putting it down in the studio, Harrison worked on the song with John Lennon at his Weybridge home, dedicating hours to polishing the details. The final recording, which lasted two days at EMI Studios in London, was included on the album Help!, released in August 1965. This album, which also served as the soundtrack for the film of the same name, consolidated The Beatles' musical evolution, exploring genres ranging from pop to rock, and demonstrating the growing sophistication in their compositions.
