The story behind
When The Beatles set out to record Dizzy Miss Lizzy, there was already a previous version of this song, written and performed by Larry Williams in 1958. Williams' original piece, although considered a rock and roll classic, did not have a major impact on the charts. Seven years later, in 1965, the English group decided to put their own spin on it. The recording took place on the same day they recorded another Larry Williams track, Bad Boy. For John Lennon, this song represented an opportunity to showcase his rock and roll prowess, with an energetic vocal performance and rhythmic, powerful instrumentation. The Beatles' version first appeared on the album Help! in the UK, and later on Beatles VI in North America, with a slight variation in the title's spelling.
The story of Dizzy Miss Lizzy dates back to 1958, when Larry Williams recorded it at Radio Recorders studios in Hollywood, California. He was backed by renowned session musicians, including René Hall, who contributed a distinctive guitar riff. Williams' vocal performance was noted for its intensity. The song was released in 78 and 45 revolutions per minute formats, and although it had a modest chart performance, it reached number 69 on the "Top 100 Sides" in April 1958. Later, John Lennon also performed it live with the Plastic Ono Band in 1969, a performance that was recorded on the album Live Peace in Toronto 1969.
