The story behind

When one immerses oneself in the sound of I Me Mine, they encounter a piece that seems to navigate between two waters, a duality reflected in both its structure and its message. The verses unfold with an air reminiscent of a ballroom dance, almost like a waltz, while the choruses explode with a rawer energy, characteristic of hard rock. This alternation is not accidental; it was conceived by George Harrison, who wrote this song amidst a period of tension within the band. The lyrics, in fact, delve into the human tendency towards self-satisfaction and selfishness, a theme Harrison explored in his connection with Hindu texts like the Bhagavad Gita, which advocate for setting aside the individual "self" in favor of a broader consciousness. Curiously, when Harrison presented the idea during the January 1969 rehearsals at Twickenham Film Studios, John Lennon showed little interest, preferring to dance with Yoko Ono, a scene that would later be immortalized in the documentary.

The recording of I Me Mine took place in January and April 1970 at EMI Studios in London, at a time when Lennon had privately withdrawn from the group. The remaining three members formalized the piece for the album Let It Be. Producer Phil Spector, when preparing the material for release, decided to extend the song's duration by repeating the chorus and the second verse, in addition to adding orchestral arrangements and a female choir. This final version, which lasts just over a minute and a half, became one of the last new recordings by The Beatles before their dissolution in April 1970. For Harrison, the song also had a personal echo, inspiring the title of his 1980 autobiography, I, Me, Mine.
