The story behind

When you dive into You Like Me Too Much, you encounter a piece that George Harrison composed, and which was released on the album Help! in the United Kingdom in August 1965. In North America, you could hear it on Beatles VI. The recording was made on February 17th of that same year at EMI Studios in London. What's interesting about the intro is how they use the piano and electric piano, a Hohner Pianet played by John Lennon. Paul McCartney and George Martin sat at the same Steinway grand piano to record two distinct parts, which only appear in that intro. McCartney's bass and Harrison's additional vocals were also recorded separately.

Musically, there's a harmonic movement that stands out: a quick jump from a G major chord to a B-flat major chord. The peculiar thing is that the natural F note of that B-flat is held over the following D major chord, creating a moment that Alan Pollack describes as the most "bluesy" in the entire song. In the verses, a four-note melodic pattern is repeated, and the chords accompany the lyrics with a back-and-forth between the second degree (an A minor chord) when saying "gone away", the fourth degree (a C major chord) when saying "back again", and returning to the tonic (G major) on "tonight". The recording engineers involved in these sessions were Malcolm Davies, Ken Scott, and Norman Smith, under the production of George Martin.
