Fun facts

The Beatles recorded "Your Mother Should Know" for their EP and LP Magical Mystery Tour in 1967. The lyrics are based on a line from the film A Taste of Honey from 1961, and talk about how songs from different eras reflect the lives of generations. Paul McCartney wrote it as a way of asking for understanding between ages, respecting the experience of mothers. In the film of Magical Mystery Tour, the song is presented as a big number, in the style of a 1930s Hollywood musical.

The story behind

The Beatles recorded Your Mother Should Know in 1967, during the recording of Magical Mystery Tour. The song was released on the American LP on November 27 and on the British EP on December 8 of the same year. It was written by Paul McCartney, who composed it in his home in St John's Wood, London, with his aunt and uncle. The idea came from a conversation with his family, where he thought about how a conflict between a mother and son can leave marks on the relationship. He wanted to show that sometimes parents know more than one believes. In the film, the boys wore carnations, and McCartney's was black, something that generated rumors about his death. The song has a touch of music hall, with a light rhythm and simple lyrics that speak about understanding the elderly.
