The story behind
When the Beatles decided to include Devil in Her Heart on their second album, With the Beatles, they put a spin on the original track. The song, which is actually called Devil in His Heart, was written by Richard B. Drapkin, who released it under the pseudonym Ricky Dee in August 1962. The track, with George Harrison on lead vocals, was recorded in just three takes, to which overdubs were later added. The session took place at EMI Studios, now known as Abbey Road Studios, in Central London, during July 1963.
Originally, the song was recorded in Detroit by the Donays for the Correc-tone Records label. Later, the Brent label from New York City picked it up and re-released it in August 1962 as the B-side of the single Bad Boy. This same combination of tracks also appeared in the UK under the Oriole label in 1962, although it did not have a major commercial impact on either side of the Atlantic. Interestingly, the Donays only made this one recording, but their lead vocalist, Yvonne Vernee, also had a solo career and later joined the Elgins at Motown.
