The story behind
The first time the Beatles approached this piece, they recorded it in a single day, on July 18, 1963. It was a particular moment: their debut album, Please Please Me, still reigned on the charts, and the band was immersed in an intense touring schedule, in addition to radio and television commitments. Despite everything, they managed to capture the essence of the song in seven takes, finally editing a version that combined parts of takes 7, 10, and 11. This recording was included in their second British album, With the Beatles, which went on sale on November 22, 1963. The album, produced by George Martin, mixed their own compositions with covers of rock and roll and Motown R&B hits, and this piece fit perfectly into that spirit.
The story behind You Really Got a Hold on Me is fascinating. Its original composer, William Robinson, wrote it in 1962 while in New York. It is said that he heard Sam Cooke's Bring It On Home to Me, which was playing a lot on the charts at the time, and that melody inspired him to create his own song in his hotel room. The Miracles' version, released as the B-side of the single Happy Landing on November 9, 1962, became a hit, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the R&B charts during the winter of 1962-63. The recording, made at Motown's Studio A on October 16, 1962, featured Robinson on lead vocals and Bobby Rogers on backing vocals, with Eddie Willis and Marv Tarplin sharing the guitar parts. This original version was recognized with a Grammy Hall of Fame award in 1998 and was the band's second single to sell over a million copies.
