Luis Miguel

Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri, known artistically as Luis Miguel, was born on April 19, 1970, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is a Mexican singer and producer, the son of an Italian mother and a Spanish father. During his childhood, he moved with his family to Mexico, where he later, in 1991, obtained Mexican citizenship. He is widely recognized for his distinctive voice, his stage presence, and his ability to interpret various musical styles, which has made him one of the most successful artists in Latin America.Throughout his career, he has sold approximately 100 million records worldwide, interpreting a variety of genres such as pop, ballads, boleros, tangos, jazz, big band, and mariachi.

Unlike other artists of his generation, he did not enter the Anglo-Saxon market during the "Latin explosion" of the 1990s, remaining as the artist with the highest sales in that decade.Luis Miguel started his music career in 1981, at the age of eleven, and at fourteen he became the youngest male artist to receive a Grammy award. Since then, he has accumulated six Grammy awards and six Grammy Latin awards. Additionally, he has been awarded fourteen Billboard Latin Music Awards, three World Music Awards, twelve Lo Nuestro awards, and five Spotify awards, among others. His album Romance, released in 1991, sold 14 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling Spanish albums of all time.He is the first Latin American artist to have two of his albums certified with a platinum disc in the United States.

More about Luis Miguel

Biography

His album Segundo romance, released in 1994, received 35 platinum discs in Latin America. Billboard recognizes him as the artist with the most hits in the Top 10 of the Hot Latin Songs chart. Additionally, he is the Latin American artist with the highest earnings from tours and concerts, reaching almost 280 million dollars. He holds the record for the most consecutive performances at the National Auditorium in Mexico, with 30 consecutive concerts, and the record for the most performances in the same place, with 258 concerts. In 2020, the magazine Billboard placed him in second place on its list of the best Latin artists of all time.Luis Miguel is the oldest of three siblings, with his brothers Alejandro and Sergio.

His father, the Spanish singer-songwriter Luisito Rey, and his mother, Marcella Basteri, settled in Mexico due to his father's career. The family also lived in Madrid, where Luis Miguel spent his childhood and studied up to the fifth grade of primary school. However, due to his artistic career, he continued his education with private tutors. The musical talent of Luis Miguel was noticed by his father, who left his own career to support him, accompanying him with the guitar and seeking opportunities for him to debut on television and sign a record contract. His first public performance was at the wedding of the daughter of the then-president of Mexico, José López Portillo, on May 29, 1981, when he was 11 years old.

This event was made possible thanks to the support of Arturo Durazo Moreno, head of the police of the City of Mexico. The success of this performance led to the fact that, a month later, Luisito Rey negotiated with executives of EMI in Mexico, who offered a record contract to his son the following year. Thus, Luis Miguel recorded his first album in 1982, titled 1+1=2 enamorados, at the age of 12, followed by the album Directo al corazón.
