The story behind

The melody of Inolvidable, born in 1944 from the pen of Cuban pianist Julio Gutiérrez, is a fascinating example of how a piece can transcend time and interpretations. What makes this song so special is its lyrical structure, which describes the search for new sensations through kisses, but always with the shadow of a past love that haunts the protagonist. This duality between exploration and nostalgia is the heart of its charm, a distinctive trait of the bolero genre that Gutiérrez masterfully captured. The composer himself, a precocious talent who conducted his orchestra at fourteen, conceived it in the context of a vibrant musical movement in Cuba, led by pianists, where pieces like this and Llanto de Luna achieved great popularity throughout Hispano-America.

The version that many of us recognize today, that of Luis Miguel, released in 1991 on his album Romance, completely revitalized the genre. This recording project, which originally contemplated a collaboration with Juan Carlos Calderón, took an unexpected turn when the latter could not participate. Faced with the need for new material, and at the suggestion of his manager, Luis Miguel turned to bolero. It was then that Armando Manzanero joined to co-produce the album, recording at Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood, California, with arrangements by Bebu Silvetti. Inolvidable, along with twelve other interpretations of boleros recorded between 1944 and 1986, became a resounding success, reaching the top of the Billboard Top Latin Songs charts in the United States. The influence of this recording was such that it is considered to have revived interest in bolero on a massive scale. Over the years, Inolvidable has been performed by a notable variety of artists, from Tito Rodríguez in 1963, whose version sold one and a half million copies, to Bebo Valdés and Diego El Cigala in their acclaimed 2003 album.
