The story behind

The melody of Por debajo de la mesa is woven with the elegance of the bolero, a genre that Armando Manzanero knew how to revive and that Luis Miguel adopted with mastery. This piece, born in 1997, is one of the two unreleased compositions that enriched the album Romances, a project that delves into the nostalgia of Latin ballads from past decades. The recording, which took place in early that year in Los Angeles, California, sought to capture the essence of themes evoking the 1940s up to 1978, but with the particularity of including these two new creations. The result was an album that not only became a sales success, surpassing 4.5 million copies and obtaining platinum certifications in several countries, but also demonstrated the enduring relevance of this musical style.

Por debajo de la mesa was released as the first single from the album Romances on July 15, 1997. The song quickly climbed positions, reaching the top spot on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart in the United States, consolidating itself as Luis Miguel's thirteenth number one on that important list. Its impact also extended to the Billboard Latin Pop Songs, where it remained at the top for five weeks, being the most outstanding Latin pop song of the year in that region. The music video, filmed in black and white at the iconic Rainbow Room in New York, shows Luis Miguel performing the song in a fine dining setting, adding a visual touch to the romantic atmosphere of the theme. The composition by Manzanero, who also produced the albums in Luis Miguel's Romance series, was recognized with a Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) Latin Award.
