México en la piel

In 2004, Luis Miguel embarked on a project that sought to reconnect with the musical roots of Mexico. After releasing a pop album the previous year, he announced his intention to record mariachi standards, describing it as a tribute to his heritage and a way to bring those melodies closer to new generations. The result was México en la piel, his sixteenth studio album, released by Warner Music Latina. This work is distinguished by being his first deep dive into the mariachi genre, featuring thirteen versions of classic songs accompanied by the renowned Vargas de Tecalitlán ensemble. The musical direction was handled by Armando Manzanero, while Luis Miguel himself took on production. The recording took place in July 2004 at Ocean Way Recording studios in Hollywood, California.

About the album

México en la piel, according to DoReSol

The album generated a divided response from critics; some praised Luis Miguel's performance and the musical quality of Mariachi Vargas, while others felt the arrangements were too polished. Despite the mixed opinions, México en la piel received significant accolades. It was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album and the Latin Grammy Award for Best Ranchero Album. Furthermore, it reached the number one spot on the sales charts in Argentina, Spain, and the Billboard Top Latin Albums in the United States. By 2006, the album had already sold over two million copies.

Several singles were released from México en la piel that resonated on the charts. "El Viajero," released in September 2004 to coincide with Mexico's Independence Day, featured a music video filmed in Amatitán, Jalisco. It was followed by "Que Seas Feliz," which reached third place on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs and ninth on the Regional Mexican Songs, and whose video was also shot in Amatitán. "Sabes una Cosa" and "Échame a Mí la Culpa" completed the album's promotion, achieving prominent positions on the Hot Latin Songs. A special edition, México en la Piel: Edición Diamante, was released in September 2005, adding two songs and a DVD with music videos. To bring these songs to life, Luis Miguel began an extensive tour that started in September 2005 and spanned two years, covering the United States, Mexico, South America, and Spain. This tour, which included both songs from the album and previous hits, became the highest-grossing tour by a Latin artist up to that point, grossing over 90 million dollars.
