The story behind

When Luis Miguel decided to reinterpret the bolero *Contigo en la distancia* for his 1991 album *Romance*, he joined a long list of artists who had already made this musical gem their own. The piece, originally conceived by the Cuban César Portillo de la Luz, was born in 1946, a time when filin, a fusion of bolero and jazz, was beginning to gain ground in Cuba. Portillo de la Luz, a self-taught guitarist and house painter, found in filin a means of expression that led him to debut professionally on the radio that same year. His version of *Contigo en la distancia* was included in a compilation called *Un momento con Portillo de la Luz*, consolidating its impact from the outset.

The version by Luis Miguel for the album *Romance* was not an isolated event. This album, released in 1991, focused on reviving classic boleros, covering songs recorded between 1944 and 1986. For this project, Luis Miguel worked with the renowned Mexican composer Armando Manzanero as co-producer, and the recording took place in studios in Hollywood, California. The choice of this genre for an entire album demonstrated the versatility and range of Luis Miguel, who has explored everything from pop to mariachi, including romantic ballads. The success of *Romance* and its focus on bolero opened the door for other artists, such as Christina Aguilera on her Spanish-language album *Mi reflejo* (2000), or the vocal quartet Il Divo on *Amor & pasión* (2015), to also pay homage to this melody. Even Plácido Domingo included his interpretation on the 2013 album *Pasión*, produced by David Foster.
