No Te Va Gustar

The sound of No Te Va Gustar emerged from blending rock with local rhythms and catchy melodies, without falling into the obvious. Although they started as a simple trio with guitar, bass, and drums, they soon incorporated winds and percussion that gave them a unique color: reggae, ska, and even candombe slipped into their chords, never losing the groove that defines them. This mix wasn’t a coincidence but the result of testing different paths until they found the one that sounded most natural. When the band added saxophones and trumpets, the change was immediate: the air became denser, with layers that invited movement and attention to instrumental details. It wasn’t just Uruguayan rock; it was something that sounded like Uruguay, yet with a reach that already hinted beyond its borders.

Their breakthrough on the scene came in 1998, when they won two major contests in Montevideo: the III Festival de la Canción and the one organized by the Youth Commission of the Intendencia. By then, the group had already moved past the name they avoid mentioning out of superstition, keeping the one Pablo Coniberti gave them when they were told no te va a gustar. That year marked the start of a phase where Montevideo’s stages felt too small for them. In 1999, they recorded Sólo de noche, their first album, produced by Juan Campodónico and released independently. The following summer took them across Uruguay’s east coast —from Punta del Diablo to Atlántida— on a tour that introduced them to new audiences and gave them the confidence to cross the river.

More about No Te Va Gustar

Biography

In 2002, with Este fuerte viento que sopla, they recorded in Santiago de Chile and left anonymity behind. The album cemented them as one of Uruguay’s most active rock bands, with shows filling plazas and a relentless work pace. In less than six months, they sold over five thousand copies, a record for an independent production at the time. By 2003, they already had a Platinum Record in hand and a Gold Record hanging in their rehearsal space. That same year, they played before twenty-eight thousand people at the Festival Pilsen Rock in Durazno, sharing the stage with bands like La Renga, and in Buenos Aires, they sold out the Caminos Verdes venue at the Teatro de Verano before the show even took place. Their 2004 European tour —which took them through cities like Berlin, Hamburg, and Madrid— closed a decade in which they went from playing small clubs to filling stadiums, always with the same boundless energy and a sound recognized even by those who didn’t understand Spanish.
