The story behind
The first time you listen to Padre de la patria by No Te Va Gustar, you get hooked by that rhythm that doesn’t quite fit into any mold. It’s not pure rock, nor ska nor murga, but it has something of all of them mixed with an energy that advances without warning. The song progresses in circles, as if time stretches with each repetition, and right there is the hook: a chorus that sticks and won’t go away. Recorded in Santiago de Chile in early 2002, alongside the rest of the album Este fuerte viento que sopla, this 4:37-minute track captures that mix of urgency and boldness the band had been testing in rehearsals at La Zapada and La salida de Abril.
What’s most surprising is how the song emerged from a specific moment: the band had spent months experimenting with sounds in Montevideo, but it was in Chile where the track took its final shape. The central theme was composed by Emiliano Brancciari along with other members, though most of the album bears his mark in the guitar and vocals. The recording in Santiago ended up being key: mixed by Mariano Pavéz in borrowed studios, the track ended up sounding rawer than the rest, as if the low-budget setup had given it that air of immediacy that makes it recognizable today. When they premiered it in October of that year at the Teatro de Verano, the band already knew something had changed: that album took them on tour across all of Uruguay, and Padre de la patria became one of those songs people hum without realizing it.
