La Vela Puerca

When a band starts out, sometimes they do so with raw energy that, over time, becomes polished. In the case of La Vela Puerca, that initial drive was felt strongly from the very beginning. Imagine: December 24, 1995, outside a bar in Montevideo, with friends and a festive spirit. That first performance, recorded on a cassette, was the key that led them to win a TV contest. The prize was no small feat: hours in the studio to shape their sound, a mix of rock with touches of punk and ska, and even Uruguayan folk music.

This is how Deskarado was born in 1998, their first album. It didn’t just sound like Latin rock with those influences; it also included tracks that would become anthems, such as Vuelan palos or Mi semilla. It was that song that caught the attention of Gustavo Santaolalla, who invited them to join Surco, a label to relaunch their music outside Uruguay. By 1999, they were already a band with an impressive following in their home country, filling the Teatro de Verano with thousands of people—a milestone for a Uruguayan band. The following year, they crossed the Río de la Plata for their first tour in Argentina, sharing stages with acts like Bersuit Vergarabat.

More about La Vela Puerca

Biography

2001 brought De bichos y flores, recorded between Buenos Aires and Los Angeles, with Santaolalla once again at the helm. This album solidified their identity, adding collaborators like Fernando Madina of Reincidentes and León Gieco. Then came A contraluz in late 2004, a work they themselves consider a turning point. While it maintained their essence, it began to showcase a more introspective sound in tracks like Va a escampar or Clarobscuro, hinting at what was to come. The band continued touring, bringing their music to Europe and Mexico, and solidifying their presence in Argentina with massive shows.
