The story behind

La Vela Puerca is usually associated with the powerful sound of their trumpets and the infectious rhythm of their songs, but The Prophet strays a bit from that mold. At just three minutes and twelve seconds, this track from Deskarado — their debut album — has a more introspective feel, where the rock foundation blends with a reggae vibe uncommon in their repertoire. It’s not the song fans scream the most at shows, but it’s there, like a breath of fresh air within an album that catapulted them to stardom in Uruguay.

The album was born from a stroke of luck: in 1996, they won a contest called Generación '96 without anyone knowing, and that opened the door for them to record with borrowed studio hours. The material caught the attention of Claudio Taddei, a Uruguayan musician who joined as producer, and together they polished a sound that had already been taking shape since their early rehearsals. By the time The Prophet reached Gustavo Santaolalla, the album was already a gold record in Uruguay, and the Argentine producer gave it one last push: he remixed the album and re-released it in 1999 under the Surco/Universal label. That’s when everything took off.
