The story behind

El ojo moro, according to DoReSol

The Moor's Eye sounds like a short, precise heartbeat, the kind that gives no warning and is already there. The trumpet comes in before the drums, with an air between reggae and rock that hooks you quickly. There’s no long introduction: the track starts straight away, as if you already knew what it was about. The bass and guitar weave a repeating foundation, but the detail lies in how Sebastián Teysera’s voice — “the Dwarf” — moves over that rhythm, effortlessly, as if he were singing between mate and laughter.Recorded in 1995, this song was born at a pivotal moment for La Vela Puerca. Their debut album, Deskarado, was secretly put together for the Generación ’96 contest, but the label Obligado Records gave them studio hours and Claudio Taddei as producer.

By the summer of ’98, they were already at Montevideo’s Teatro de Verano, opening for Los Piojos and earning their first gold record. The leap to fame came with Gustavo Santaolalla’s remix in 1999, when the album was re-released by Surco/Universal. Yet what’s curious is that The Moor’s Eye always stood out for its raw, unfiltered sound: a trumpet that asks for no permission and lyrics that don’t explain, they simply exist.
