Daft Punk

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo met in 1987 at the Lycée Carnot, a high school in Paris. They became friends, recorded demos together, and in 1992 formed Darlin', a trio of indie rock with Laurent Brancowitz on guitar and drums. The name came directly from a song by the Beach Boys, which they also covered. It lasted only a short time: about six months, four songs, two concerts. Brancowitz continued his path with another band, Phoenix. Bangalter summed it up like this: «quite normal». From those ashes something different was born. The name Daft Punk wasn't chosen by them, it was given to them by a review.

The critic Dave Jennings, in Melody Maker, described the music of Darlin' as «a daft punky thrash». They found it funny and adopted it. Homem-Christo remembered that they had struggled a lot to come up with «Darlin'», and this new name simply appeared on its own. So they put away the guitars, grabbed drum machines and synthesizers, and started building something else. That something else took shape in 1997 with Homework, released by Virgin Records. The reviews followed, and the singles «Da Funk» and «Around the World» put them on the map of the French house movement, that mix of house, funk, disco, rock and pop that was happening in Paris.
