The story behind
Doin’ It Right, according to DoReSol
What makes Doin’ It Right so particular is that ethereal, almost celestial voice we hear. It turns out to be that of Panda Bear, a solo artist who is also part of the group Animal Collective. The producers of Daft Punk greatly admired his work, both his individual work and that of his band. Curiously, this is the only piece on the album Random Access Memories that remains completely within the electronic realm. They recorded it at the very end of the entire process, and describe it as something very relaxed, a mix of their most futuristic vision with a very current sound.
This track was gestated between 2008 and 2012, an extensive period during which Daft Punk worked in several emblematic studios. They went through Henson, Conway, and Capitol Studios in California, as well as Electric Lady Studios in New York City, and the Gang Recording Studio in Paris, France. The complete album, Random Access Memories, released in May 2013, aimed to be a tribute to American music of the late 70s and early 80s, with a special focus on the Los Angeles scene. After the more austere production of their previous work, Human After All from 2005, for this record they recruited session musicians to incorporate live instrumentation, limiting the use of purely electronic elements. The duration of Doin’ It Right is 4:11, and the production was handled by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo.
