Homework

When Daft Punk released their first album, Homework, in 1997, they weren't aiming to create an album, but rather the songs they were creating as independent singles ended up coming together naturally. The title, Homework, reflects this idea of home-based work, done with limited resources and spontaneously in their own studio, which they called Daft House in Paris. This approach, more than a plan, allowed them to experiment and explore sounds, resulting in a work that defined the sound of French house and captured global attention.

About the album

Homework, according to DoReSol

The album was recorded between 1994 and 1996, and mastered in London. Two of the tracks that resonated most were Da Funk and Around the World. Both reached number one on the US dance charts, and Around the World also charted on the Billboard Hot 100. This initial success, along with other tracks like Alive, which had already appeared on a previous single, showed they had enough material for a full album. The album was released in Europe on January 20, 1997, and in the United States on March 25 of the same year.

Homework became a milestone, charting in 14 countries, including reaching number 3 in France. By February 2001, it had sold over two million copies worldwide, earning gold and platinum certifications. The way Daft Punk managed their career, prioritizing control over their music and creative destiny, was as important as the album's sound itself. This "control is freedom" philosophy marked their path, allowing them to maintain artistic integrity even after signing with Virgin Records.
