The story behind

When Daft Punk released their first album, Homework, in 1997, they had already been working together since 1996. The original idea was to release the songs as standalone singles, but they realized they had more than enough material for a full album. In fact, the title Homework refers to the fact that a large part of the work was done in a home studio. This album was a success, charting in 14 countries, and singles like "Da Funk" and "Around The World" reached number one on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play. "Burnin'" appeared as the third single from this work, and is distinguished by a rawer, more minimalist beat compared to other tracks on the album. The song draws from the sound of the Chicago house scene, something the French duo deeply admired.

The music video for "Burnin'," directed by Seb Janiak, is a tribute to those Chicago producers who so inspired Daft Punk. The filming took place in the city, using an office building at One South Wacker Drive as the setting. In the video, we see a party unfolding in a skyscraper as a fire begins to spread, but the attendees seem unaware until firefighters intervene. There is a suggested connection between a child playing with a fire truck and the subsequent evacuation. Key figures from the house scene such as DJ Sneak, Roger Sanchez, and Derrick Carter appear in this scene, as well as Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo themselves, who make brief appearances. The album edit, which runs 6:53, was composed by both members of the duo, who also handled the production. Later, in 2007, elements of "Burnin'" were merged with the song "Too Long" for the live album Alive 2007.
