The story behind
The raw energy of Rollin’ & Scratchin’, with its nearly seven and a half minutes of duration, is a fascinating starting point for understanding Daft Punk's proposal on their first album, Homework. This piece, originally released in 1997, doesn't beat around the bush; it's pure sonic exploration that feels as if it were being gestated in real time. The way the sounds intertwine and transform, almost as if they were scratching and rolling in a hypnotic cycle, is what makes it so distinctive. There's no conventional pop structure, but rather a deep immersion in textures and rhythms that invite you to get carried away by the intensity.
This track is part of Homework, Daft Punk's debut album, which saw the light of day in France on January 20, 1997, reaching the United States on March 25 of the same year, distributed by Virgin Records and Soma Quality Recordings. The album, recorded in a home studio, as its title suggests, was the result of a decision by musicians Thomas Bangalter and Guy‐Manuel de Homem‐Christo to compile the material they had rather than releasing it as independent singles. Their career management was handled by Pedro Winter, also known as Busy P, from 1996 to 2008. Before forming Daft Punk, Bangalter and de Homem-Christo were part of a group called Darlin', and both musicians showed influences from bands like The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones in their early days.
